Global Visits

Transforming educational and cultural exchanges

Only in the OHara airport....terribly uneventful so far save the near miss of an accident in our bus as the driver swerved madly on the Chicago expressway avoiding a truck suddenly crossing lanes.

I am thinking about the last time I traveled to Kyrgyzstan, I was with George (my husband) and Joe (our son). The banking system in Kyrgyzstan was basically non existent at the time, and no ATMs. We were advised to carry lots of cash to get us started.....so each of us had $2000 in money belts wrapped around our waists and under our shirts. Today I have only $300....I am told there are ATMs. I will trust this! And debit cards are now also used. I am sure I am in store for more discoveries!

Hi Betty

Hope you have a good time back in the USSR (no, that was the Beatles). I mean back in Kyrgyzstan. I've never been there myself, but with some experience from East and Central Europe I can imagine what it is like. Why not come back via Copenhagen and Lis and I shall show you around - all the best - Henrik

I will be in Osh half my three week stay...that is where the symposium is being held this year. I did not get to Osh while here five years ago. My Kyrgyz friends tell me it is more of the 'Orient' than Bishkek....which really is very Russian. In some ways I think they are more proud of Osh in terms of their culture than Bishkek, which now is a very large city with both huge Russian and Western influences...hard to city the heritage through it all.

My third blog is up.

Hi Betty,
Just read your other post about Kyrgyz history. Good stuff. Are you going to be in the Ferghana Valley at all while you are there?

A 'Wired' Mission

Go anywhere in the world, and we are 'wired' together by advancing technology. But we have yet to figure out how to 'wire' peace. Our mission is to use this technology to leap over vast cultural and geographical divides, linking students and teachers together, to talk with each other, laugh together, collaborate in a project, share pictures of our families, our favorite songs.....to be friends.

For several years, Global Visits was a pioneer using modern communications technology to linking people together from diverse cultures. We called our efforts 'non traditional' student exchanges.

Now, we join the world of 'social networking' with a serious purpose: peace and understanding.
